Cut down a Tree with a Spoon

In today’s society we are constantly going as fast as we can.  100 Miles per hour at all times.   Sometimes that is just to barley keep up with everyone else.  This has been one weakness I have had to deal with in my life because you can not go 100% all the time.  Eventually the human body needs its rest.  While resting the most amazing thing happens with the human body but it actually rebuilds it self and gets you ready for the next day.  Without rest we could not function and our body has an interesting way of telling us that.

So the past few weeks I have been traveling a TON.  Every second I get I am trying to squeeze in work for one of my businesses.  Needless to say I was not giving myself time to Rest and recover.  The $500 Millionaire has warned me about this multiple time but with my superman complex I fell like I can work through anything.  Well the human body has a fun way of telling you it is time to rest.  It will shut down and just not let you work.  No Focus, No Motivation, and no ability to work.  If you think I am wrong, just try to stay up for a few days and you will see that your body will eventually shut it self-down.

When this happened to me this last weekend, it made me think of multiple lessons and stories I have heard from the $500 Millionaire.   It is a story about two groups of men cutting down a tree.  Now before this starts sounding like a fairy tale, they is no happy ending but there is a moral to the story.  The two groups are asked to cut down 10 trees.  One group has much bigger, stronger men, and the other has the weak smaller guys.  The strong men get right at it, they start sawing away at the trees.  They fly through the first one and then onto the second tree.  The Smaller guys decide to cut down the first tree then take a second to sharpen the saw and then go to the next.  The bigger guys do not understand why the smaller guys with do this.  What a waste of time.

Well it turns out that as time went on, The bigger men started to not only get tired with non-stop work, but their saw also was becoming dull so towards the end of this challenge they were working even harder, becoming more and more tired, and ended up not being able to finish all 10 trees.  The Weaker Smaller guys took a bit longer but were able to cut down the trees faster on average because they took 5 minutes to sharpen the saw.

Another story I was told was about two groups of men were challenged to cut a tree down with a spoon.  The bigger, stronger group just started to hack at the tree with the spoon but the wiser weaker men took the spoon, sharpened the edges and then were able to cut down the tree.  Both stories could just be wise tales but the lesson is still there.  You need to take time to allow you body and brain to recharge in order to go further.

This is something that the $500 millionaire says our society needs to do.  Like I said this is really a weakness of mine as I just like to keep going and going.  Kind of like the Energizer bunny in the last post.

According to the $500 millionaire the human brain can work consistently effective for no more than 2 hours on one task.  The human body also needs its rest in order to preform at high efficiency.  Make sure you are taking some time to rest but also sharpen your saw.  Reading blogs such as this one are things that will help sharpen your saw. Your brain is like a muscle in that it needs time to heal after it has been worked hard.  Keep that in mind and allow yourself to work at your highest efficiency and take some time to rest, relax and recharge.

Please feel free to share this blog with anyone you feel it may help and comment below on any ways you are able to relax/sharpen the saw to stay as efficient as possible.

How To Eat An Entire Elephant By Yourself!

We have seen some strange food eating contests throughout the past few years.  We have Hot dog eating contest, wing eating contests, weird food eating challenges on you tube.  There are even shows on TV right now on pushing the limits of what people can eat and how much of it they can eat.  Imagine if one day you were challenged with the task of eating an elephant.  Yes an entire elephant which weight anywhere between 2.7 tons and 4.5 tons!  What would you do?  How would you do it?  Where would you start?  That is a lot to eat.  Is it even possible?  The $500 Millionaire will explain exactly how to eat an elephant, no matter how big it is, from start to finish.

Just to make it clear, the $500 Millionaire does not suggest anyone should try to eat an elephant but if you ever wanted to, this process would probably work.  Also from here on out, the concept of an elephant is not a physical elephant as much as a metaphor of a HUGE Task or Goal that you need to do and the $500 Millionaire will explain how to take on a task that is just overwhelmingly large.  It is a very simple concept but should have a complex effect on the outcomes in your life.  The $500 Millionaire once asked me how would I take on this task.  I said, “I would call some friends and we could take it down together.”   He then explained that I was alone and had to do it on my own.  Well that changed things and after a while of thinking, I openly admitted, “I don’t think I could do it on my own.” He adamantly disagreed.

He said it was quite simple.  (Most of the $500 Millionaire lessons’ are VERY simple but not necessarily easy) He suggested that I should break it down into sections and just do one at a time.  If those sections were too big, then break them down into smaller sections, one at a time.  the $500 Millionaire suggested I keep breaking it down into smaller sections until I was able to actually handle the sections.  I then asked him, ”Wouldn’t it just easier to put it in a blender and make a big smoothie?”  He didn’t really understand my joking ton and said, “If that’s how you can best handle the task, then sure, get a bender.”

This is how you take on and accomplish the Big Hairy Audacious Goals or B-HAGs as Jim Collins puts it in “Good to Great.”  Tons of people have that BIG goal that they know they want but they just cant figure out where to start.  Think of it as if your big goal is to eat the elephant.  Instead of trying to figure out where you start and probably going in the wrong direction, why not start with the finish and go backwards.  You might see this in books called top-down visualization.   It is like when we were younger and tried to do a maze, if you start from the finish line you make fewer mistakes.

So take the Goal (Elephant) and break it down into sections of smaller goals.  Then take those goals and break them down into smaller goals, into years, then months, then weeks, then possibly days.  That is how you take down a beast.

This is also how you work out time management.  I am sure, if your like every other human, you have had a time where you were just overwhelmed with things to do?  Well here is what the $500 Millionaire would have you do.  Take the BIG to do list, write it down, and then start breaking it off into smaller sections until it is manageable.

We challenge you to do this and promise you that you will be amazed with some of the things you will be able to accomplish.  Some of the most challenging, overwhelming, massive goals that you just can’t even understand where to start will be made simple if you just start at the end.  There will be no clearer path to success for any task at hand then looking at the end goal and taking your steps backwards.  To show you this works, feel free to do these two mazes.  Try the first one starting at the beginning. And try the second one starting at the finish.

Depending on if you actually did the mazes above, and how much you are actually paying attention, it is quite obvious that they were the exact same maze.  If you followed the instructions you will see the second one that you start from the finish was a bit easier to complete. Even if it is upside down.

Work every task of your life just like this.  It doesn’t matter if it is s a goal or just a long to do list filled with every day things like family, work, and personal tasks.  Just so you know, finishing your to do list is sometimes the Big Goal.  Take a second to take the elephant, break it down into smaller sections.  If they are still too big, break it down again, and again, and again until it is manageable and that is how you achieve success…and that is how the $500 Millionaire suggest you eat an elephant.

If you know someone who is a bit overwhelmed, has a ton to do, is always busy, please send them this blog or post it on their Facebook/twitter page.  Please feel free to share this information with anyone you feel could use a quick read this week and help get something’s done.

Money is Not The Root Of All Evil…YOU ARE!

ImageMany people think that money is the root of all evil and it is not.  Many people say that money is what brings out the worst in a person and it is not.  Many people think that money is what changes people and it is not.  All money does to a person is accentuate their true character.  Money is a Maximizer for good or for bad.  Money is a good servant but a bad master.

I have heard many people refer back to the bible and say money is the root of all evil and that is not what is written.  It is written that the love of money is the root of all evil. That is a huge difference that seems to be left out.  Money is one of the most powerful tools but as we all know, with great power comes great responsibility.

Depending on how long ago you started reading this blog, the $500 Millionaire wanted me to write to express the misconception that you need money to be successful.  So many times we hear people say, “Oh, if I just had more money!” Success sometimes brings money and money is just a scorekeeper for some but money does not create or change a person.  That is done far before any money or power is in the picture.

Money is a maximizer of character.  If you ever want to see the true character of a person give them money or give them power, the truth will come out.  It is amazing to see how people don’t change at all but instead they start showing their true colors.  Again money is a maximizer so if you are a bad person who cheats and steals, with more money or power, there will be more cheating and stealing.  If you are a good decent person you will be able to use money to do many good things.

This paradigm of the rich being bad is something that has messed with our society for years.  Even Puff Daddy and Notorious B.I.G. wrote a song titled , “Mo Money Mo Problems”. Now this is not the $500 Millionaires favorite song but it also is not true.  Mo money does not cause Mo problems.  Bad people in your life and an unstable foundation in your life causing the problems, when you pile some more money on there, then those smaller problems just become bigger. Again Money is a Maximizer of both good and evil.

Look at some of the amazing things that money has allowed humans to do throughout history.  Also look at the bad things that money has allowed people to do throughout history.  Again money does not change much. Mo Money; Mo of the same.  Make sure your life is in order before you gain money or power because if not, you will fall quickly.

With money being a maximizer it can allow people do good or bad things. The $500 millionaire also understands that money does not buy happiness.  Again, if you are a miserable person with a ton of money, you are just going to become more miserable. If you doubt this at all, look at stories of people who win the lottery, within a year, if they are cheats, crooks, sad, happy, loving, caring, etc, they will revert right back where they were.  All money does is help them get there faster.

Steve Martin was in a movie called “The Jerk” and although a comedy, it is a prime example that money is a maximizer of character.  Once a jerk; always a jerk.   Besides being one of the $500 Millionaires favorite movies, it is comical to see that all money does is maximize an individuals true character.

I know we are repeating ourselves but The $500 Millionaire wants people to understand that money does Imagenot make you good or bad or happy or sad.  That has noting to do with the amount of money you have as much as the amount of character you posses.  With no integrity or poor character, money, like power, will be no good for you or those around you. With high integrity and quality character the things you can do with money are amazing.  Please do not be ashamed if you are “rich” or come from a wealthy upbringing. Please do not be mad at someone because they have money.

If you meet someone who is a jerk, it is not because they are rich or poor, it is because they are a jerk.  If you meet someone who is nice, it is not because they are rich or poor, it is because they are nice.

Someone with money is like someone with power. Look at some of the people though out history that had power.  Some used it for good and others for bad.  It is the person that is good or bad, not the power or money.  Remember that when you have the ability to give that power to an individual.

Also remember that when you are working on growing yourself as a person. You need to create that foundation like the $500 Millionaire wrote about in ” What We Really Learned From the 3 Little Pigs.” (https://500dollarmillionaire.wordpress.com/2012/06/11/what-you-really-learn-from-the-3-little-pigs-2/)

Why Energizer Bunny Never Fails

I meant to lose 20 lbs but it turns out I ended up gaining 25 lbs.  What happened?  According to the $500 millionaire this is not a failure.  It certainly is not a success but it most definitely not a failure.  What is it? Quickly learn why the Energizer Bunny never fails.

Why Energizer Bunny Never Fails.

Why Energizer Bunny Never Fails

Ok…sooo, I meant to lose 20 lbs but it turns out I ended up gaining 25 lbs.  What happened?  According to the $500 millionaire this is not a failure.  It certainly is not a success but it most definitely not a failure.  What is it?  This is one MAJOR understanding that successful people possess that unsuccessful people might never be able to grasp.

Everyone runs into road blocks, not all successful people have a silver spoon handed to them.  In fact, even the ones that do, still hits these road blocks.   Since every one hits roadblocks, that can’t be what separates successful people from un-successful people, so what does?  It is not important what the road block is, but more how they handle the road block.

With this mindset it is possible to live a life where there is no such thing as failure.  Obviously with no failure, there can be no success.  The $500 Millionaire believes, there is no failure or success, just results.   The only way fail is by giving up.  Until you give up, you have not failed.  Remember, just because you gained 25 lbs doesn’t mean you failed, you just got a VERY interesting result.  Again, there are only results.

This past week I volunteered at a youth leadership event that is hands down the best leadership camp ANYONE can go to.  The program is called LEAP and you need to check it out (http://leapfoundationusa.org).  While I was here, I had the chance to speak with one coach that was experiencing something strange.  This reminded me of all the times the $500 Millionaire tells me, “Successful people do what unsuccessful people avoid.”  In this specific case, like most, it showed that in order to overcome this issue, we needed to handle the results in a different manner.  Not just the Easy way (Unsuccessful people) but the right way (Successful People)

Now to make myself clear, this coach has been extremely successful but was in a bit of a rut.  The $500 Millionaire had an interesting situation for the coach to imagine.  I had this coach imagine she was running. After the coach has been running for a while, out of nowhere, a huge wall comes out of the grown and is now blocking the path, What is the first thing you think?

Before you read on, imagine this and comment below on what is your first thought…

The coach started laughing and was a bit confused as to where this was going so the $500 Millionaire asked her what was the first thing that they thought. The Coach said the first thing that was thought was, “Why is that wall here?!?”   As we talked the coach kept bringing up that they didn’t understand why the wall was there and kept bring everything back to the wall.  I smiled because I was thinking something totally different. I did not care much about the wall or why it was there, all I cared about was how to get around it.
It is that simple, successful people focus on the solution or the next step while unsuccessful people tend to focus on the problem.  There was a problem, a wall came out of nowhere and stopped your from being able to run (Move Forward).  Instead of focusing on the wall (problem)…let’s focus on getting over it (Solution).  Focus on the solution, not the problem.  To be successful you must understand that you need two things, Knowledge (there is a wall there) and Action (how do I get around this).  With the correct knowledge and action you will produce the correct results.  The question the $500 Millionaire does not want you to worry about what happened as much as what’s next?

The $500 millionaire is looking for people who can get the result and then ask what is next.  Successful people take time to celebrate their success but then quickly move on to the next step.  Failure is also present when you finally accept success and stop moving forward.  It is a simple formula but is it used by few.  Successful people, Like the Bunny, Keep going and going and going and going…

Remember, there are things in your life that you can control and something’s you can’t. One thing we can control is our own actions.  That is about all we can control.  The rest is out of our hands so it is ridiculous to think we should put any attention to things we admit we cannot control.  Instead, let’s pull all of our focus on the solution we need, that way we can get the results that we want.
